100 mph Jet Ski, Elephant Butte, N.M.

Motiva Performance Engineering and Dave Rochau have teamed up with El Paso jet ski racer Ricky Trevizo on a research and development program to build a jet ski capable of 100 mph.

Ricky, a top rider, asked Dave to tune his Sea Doo jet ski. “These jet skis typically start out at 425 hp but we’re pushing to get 500 hp and eventually 550 hp,” Dave said.

“Ricky brought me in knowing that I had never seen a jet ski before I worked on his,” Dave said. Initial attempts to mount a plug-and-play MoTec engine control unit had mixed results. “We increased his performance but the longer-range goal is to build him a higher-performing jet ski from the ground, (or water) up.”

“We will re-engineer the entire system, so that all the pieces work together, and believe we can produce 100 mph,” Dave said.

Motiva conducts its research on Ricky’s jet ski at Elephant Butte Lake in Southern New Mexico.
